Top scorer out of crucial Haverhill match
Haverhill go into their must-win match at home to Braintree this Saturday (1pm) without their leading run scorer, Adam Dellar.
Dellar (who is on holiday) has been the go-to batsman for Haverhill this season, scoring 669 runs at an average of 51.46 to leave only three players above him in the Marshall Hatchick Two Counties Championship Division Two runs chart.
Although Dellar’s absence will be felt, Haverhill skipper Joe Woodley knows that it gives others the chance to grab the headlines.
He said: “This week gives us the opportunity to say to the players, there’s your chance, they are a good side, let’s see what you can do.”
Braintree currently sit second in the table with a 25 point advantage over fourth-placed Haverhill.
With just four games left after Saturday, defeat for the hosts could leave them with an uphill task to get into the top two and secure an automatic promotion place.
Haverhill are also up against the division’s leading run scorer, Australian overseas player Lachlan Ford, who has accrued 763 runs from just 13 innings at an average of 76.30.
Woodley said: “We go into this weekend knowing It’s a tough game but if we win it sets us up for the rest of the season, but if we lose we know we’ve still got four winnable games left.
“Perhaps if we don’t finish in the top two then we are just not good enough to go up.”
Haverhill XI: Powell, Savage, Phillips, Davis, Poole, Pass, Boulton, Wilkins, Bailey, Woodley (c), C Brunning.
