MARSHALL HATCHICK TWO COUNTIES CHAMPIONSHIP

DIVISION FOUR

Haverhill II 130-4 beat Witham II 125 by 6 wickets

A comfortable win for Haverhill took them up into the top two after a surprise defeat for erstwhile second-placed Tuddenham at second-from-bottom St Margarets.

The home side had four changes from the previous week but it did not seem to affect the team performance.

The visitors won the toss and decided to bat first on a greenish looking wicket.

The returning Richard Partridge (3-46) opened the bowling with Martyn Wilkins (1-22) and Partridge when he had Matt Hart (11) well caught by Sam Hartshorn with the score on 21

He soon followed it up by removing Duncan Jenkinson (21) lbw and then Ollie Cooke (5) played on to his stumps as the visitors fell to 49-3 off 11 overs.

Wilkins was keeping things tight at the other end as his first five overs only costing seven runs.

Charles Spence (17) tried to break the shackles by playing a few shots but was beaten by a ball from Charles Shannon (1-24) with the score on 63-4.

Josh Ruthven replaced Partridge and soon had success as he removed Lewis Hart courtesy of a spectacular catch by Partridge and clean bowled Jim Hare, both for ducks, as Witham slumped to 66-6 after 17 overs.

This soon became 83-7 as Ruthven bowled Ciaran Bunch (2) and then Mike Beatty (25) was removed stumped by Phil Dingley off the returning Wilkins with the score at 98-8 from 23 overs.

There followed a period of consolidation from Ben Mckendry (22 no) and skipper Anthony Facey as the pair carefully added only nine runs in 10 overs as Wilkins and young Harry Harding (2-20) bowled very tightly and kept the pressure on.

Finally Facey was well caught by Micky Rinaldi at mid-wicket off Harding with the score on 107-9 before a brief flurry of runs was ended when Chris Hills (10) was bowled by Harding’s quicker delivery to leave the Visitors all out for 125 off 39 overs.

Although the home side were very happy at tea they knew that Witham had useful bowlers who could use the conditions as well.

Liam Botten (14) and Micky Rinaldi (26) opened up for Haverhill and both took advantage of any loose deliveries in a partnership of 46 in nine overs before Rinaldi was bowled by Mckendry (1-30).

Botten soon followed after following a wide delivery and edging to the wicketkeeper Cooke in the next over.

Carl Bradford (15) and Ruthven rebuilt the innings in a partnership of 33 before Bradford found the safe hands of gully.

At 77-3 off 18 overs the innings was in the balance but the returning Sam Hartshorn (16 no) and Ruthven took the score to 113-3 off 24 overs.

Ruthven was caught after attempting one shot too many but his fine innings included seven boundaries and had sealed the match for the home side.

Shannon joined Hartshorn and his quick fire 11 soon took Haverhill to victory in 27 overs

The win puts Haverhill in good stead for the upcoming matches against Abberton and Tuddenham which will test the credentials of the side .
