REVIEW: Alexandra Burke in The Bodyguard
The Bodyguard The Musical, Theatre Royal Norwich
She’s got it! The X Factor and some! This musical is a tour de force for 2008 X Factor winner Alexandra Burke who steps into Whitney Houston’s’ very large shoes without missing a step.
She takes on the role of superstar songstress Rachel Marron with vigour, belting out hit after iconic hit in the two and a half hour show.
Indeed this stage version of the 1992 film has even more numbers than the original movie including I’m Every Woman, All the Man That I Need, So Emotional, I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Greatest Love Of All.
As Burke performs a massive 13/14 songs per performance, there isn’t a huge amount of time for great plot development or much exploration of character. But we all know the storyline - she falls for her bodyguard – Kevin Costner in the movie and here played as the strong silent type by Stuart Reid. Her sister, played by Rachel John, who has an equally stunning voice, dazzles and young Josiah Choto as Fletcher, the superstar’s son, almost steals the show.
This is a terrific night out, with striking staging, dramatic lighting and fabulous dancing - the costumes are great, too.
It’s off to America soon so lucky them and I can really see it joining the likes of Mamma Mia as a premier division musical. And yes, yours truly was on her feet for the encore and has been singing a medley of the hits ever since. I might even have to go again!
The show runs until Saturday. Call 01603 630000 for details.
